Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a dangerous eye disease that can be hard to detect. Many people are not even aware they have it. It is important to diagnose this condition and slow its progression. At Advanced Family Eye Care PC, we can help. Serving St. Joseph, South Haven, Benton Harbor, and Stevensville, MI, our optometrist diagnoses this condition and provides treatment options.

How Glaucoma Develops

Glaucoma affects the optic nerve, typically because of increased pressure in the eyes. When fluid builds up in the eyes, it increases eye pressure, eventually damaging the optic nerve and your vision. Unfortunately, it's one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. An accurate diagnosis of glaucoma and early detection are imperative. If caught early enough, you minimize further complications and can preserve your vision.

Risk Factors for Glaucoma

While anyone can get glaucoma, there are portions of the population that have higher susceptibility. These individuals should have regular eye exams with our optometrist. Risk factors include:

  • African Americans who are over the age of 40
  • Those over the age of 60
  • Individuals who have a family history of glaucoma
  • Those who have a pre-existing health condition (such as diabetes or high blood pressure)

Taking Action against Glaucoma

If you know you're in a high-risk group, a dilated exam is imperative. This is the only way our eye doctor can examine the internal structures of the eye. A tonometer is used to examine your eye's pressure, and higher levels (above 20mm Hg) typically indicate that an individual has glaucoma.

Treatment for Glaucoma

There isn't a cure for glaucoma, but there are ways to slow its progression. As long as it's detected early, managing it becomes much easier. With modern advancements in healthcare, treating glaucoma is possible. Typically, glaucoma can be treated with several different methods, such as surgery, eye drops, or medicines and supplements.

You can't prevent glaucoma, but there are lifestyle choices you can make to reduce your risk of developing it. These include eating a healthy diet, exercising, not smoking, and not skipping an annual eye exam if you're in a high-risk category. Keeping open communication with our optometry team is also important if you are experiencing any symptoms of glaucoma or if you have questions regarding treatment options.
