Dry Eye

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when one or both eyes become too dry to produce tears. Dry eyes can destroy the surface of the eye, cause inflammation of the eye or eyes, and other issues.

What Causes Dry Eye?

There are several causes of dry eye. The main two causes are too little production of tears and a higher occurrence of tears evaporating. There are several reasons why one or both happen.

Lack of tear production can happen due to age, medications, and several medical conditions. Tears may evaporate more because of a lack of vitamin A, not blinking as much, eye allergies, dry air, and eyelid issues.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

There are various symptoms of dry eye. These include:

  • Being sensitive to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Feeling like something is in your eyes
  • Stinging or burning in the eyes
  • Red eyes

Other symptoms include having a hard time wearing contact lenses, watery eyes, discharge in and around the eye area, and having a hard time driving at night. If you have one or several of these symptoms that linger, visit our optometrist for dry eye treatment.

What Can Prevent Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes can be prevented in many ways. Some of these ways can be discussed with our optometrist. Below are some suggestions to keep dry eyes at a minimum:

  • Keeping your computer screen below eye level
  • Keep air from blowing in your eyes
  • Use artificial tears on a regular basis

What Is Dry Eye Treatment?

Our optometry team at Advanced Family Eye Care PC will discuss your treatment plan once you get checked for dry eyes. Dry eye treatment can include special eye drops to keep your eyes moist and talking about medication or lifestyle changes to prevent symptoms from getting worse. If we find another eye condition causing dry eye, we will also treat that condition.
