If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, you've probably already seen plenty of doctors. With so much to stay on top of, it can be hard to remember that you also need to schedule regular appointments with an optometrist. Diabetes can have a huge impact on the soft tissues surrounding your eyes, and taking an active role in your eye disease management will be crucial to ensuring that you can see for years to come. Odds are you have a lot of questions about your treatment options for this disease. While we will take the time to answer every question you have, we have gathered some of our most common questions here.
Diabetes can cause an increase in blood pressure, which in turn can cause the blood vessels in the soft tissues around the eyes to expand. This will cause these tissues to put pressure on the eyes and optic nerve, causing vision problems. Our optometrist can assess your eye pressure to diagnose diabetic retinopathy before vision loss occurs.
If diabetic retinopathy is allowed to go untreated then it can eventually cause enough damage to the optic nerve that a person could lose most or even all of their vision.
Ideally, make your first appointment as soon as possible after your diabetes diagnosis. Our optometrist will tell you how often you should be seen after that, but most patients need to come in at least once every six months.
If you live in St. Joseph, South Haven, Stevensville, or Benton Harbor, MI, and you're dealing with diabetic retinopathy, give our office a call. We have years of experience helping people manage eye health conditions.
